Former Milwaukee cop seeks beer and wine license for shop

Brown Deer has denied licenses to other stores, gas stations

Brown Deer - Trustees will hold a public hearing on Feb. 6 before deciding on whether to grant beer and wine licenses for a new variety store opening on Sherman Boulevard.

Joenette Kelly-Kidd, the owner of Shop on Sherman, 7979 N. Sherman Blvd., applied for the wine and beer licenses which she said will likely make up about 10 percent of the sales in the business.

Kelly-Kidd, a retired Milwaukee police sergeant, said she understands the legal aspects of beer and wine sales and would have employees who would follow the law.

"There will be no sale of tobacco or alcohol to minors," she said.

The store will sell everything from beauty aides and food to undergarments and T-shirts, she said.

She has applied to the U.S. Post Office for a permit so people can send and receive mail at the location.

Trustees, however, decided they want to hear what nearby residents have to say about beer and wine sales.

"There are a lot of residents in the area and I would like to hear from them," Trustee Terry Boschert said.

The board has limited the expansion of those licenses in the village.

"We have denied those licenses to convenience stores, gas stations and Walgreens," Trustee Tim Schilz said.

A request by the owners of a convenience store about two blocks away was denied within the last year.
