Brown Deer - Beginning with the class of 2016, students graduating from Brown Deer High School will need to 25 credits for graduation, up from the current 24.
The extra credit will be earned from classes in digital competency. High School Principal Jim Piatt presented a half-credit new course to the board, digital literacy for commerce and citizenship. The course will fill part of the requirement, with an online digital class approved by the school filling the other half-credit.
The new class would provide students with digital competency, Piatt said, and lead them through the steps to build a personal learning plan and network.
Most students would take the class in their junior year, he said. As part of the course, the school will purchase a Web domain for each student which will be given to them either when they leave the school or graduate. The cost for the domain will be approximately $15 per student.
The board approved the extra credit requirement and the new course at its meeting Tuesday.
